Production Machines
The world we live in is full of speciesism. In addition to racism, male
chauvinism and more types of discrimination, the humans exploit all the kinds of
animals in every way they can as long as they thrive.
The human race puts animal suffering aside, collects the MONEY, and enjoys his
luxury lifestyle.
Millions of farm animals are reared behind the closed doors of the factory farms.
Often kept in conditions of utter deprivation.
They are treated as little more than production machines.
DAIRY COWS are being pushed to breaking point to produce ever more milk. Frequently
infected with painful mastitis, often lame, most cows produce 2 or 3 calves and
then get slaughtered - worn out years before their time. Their male calves usually
get to cruel veal crate farms in Europe.
Already, farm animals are being pushed to their natural limits to
maximize production. Genetic engineering threatens to put these animal
"machines" into overdrive. By altering their genetic make-up, animals
will be made to grow even faster, bigger, or leaner.
The sun is shining, birds are singing, and the air smells sweet in the field.
A calf is born, coal black with snow-colored markings. She has a big white star
on her forehead. Her eyes shine with the glory of new life. The newborn calf
struggles to her feet and wobbles to her mother to sip a few precious drops of milk.
Within hours, the calf is torn away from her mum. The plastic tag that pierces
her ear identifies her as number 1902h. From now on that all what she is; milk
machine number 1902h.
Many people still believe that the dairy industry work to ancient natural laws and that the farmers are simply on hand to take the milk that cows automatically produce and have no need for. Unlike the fairytales, the real world is much deplorable.
In the real world, animals are been captive in cages in farms, zoos,
circuses, and laboratories. Animals are bred to
suffer, as simply as it
sounds.
For ages, the Human race abuses animals in every possible way. Animals
do not need us to fight for their rights; they need no rights from Human
race. They need to be left alone.
Cow number 1902h is a replacement heifer, a replacement for dairy cow that her milk production level drop and she is no longer able to produce numerous quantity of milk to make it economically valuable for the farmer. She has been taken away from her mother by force, since the farmer want to prevent the transmission of diseases. Pathogens are so prevalent in dairy cows, that the nursing calves could become infected and possibly die.
She is fed milk from a bucket, and kept in a small crate with no companionship or warmth from other calves and of course, from her mother, even though she is only a few-hours old infant. Despite her new living conditions, she survives, growing stronger each day.
Like every mammal, all cows must be impregnated for them to begin producing milk. Therefore, when she reaches age of around twelve months she is about to go through Artificial Insemination.
The farmers are shoving her to the barn, where she will be RAPED. They are using evey possible way to get her there, including beating her on the head, kicking her and shock her with an electric shocker. The miserable animal is frightened, she wants to fight, to kick back, but for some reason she is only resisting. This gentle creature doesn't harm anyone, but still she is getting beaten. She does not understand. Do you?
In the rape barn, the farmers restrict her head in a stock for preventing her to fight through the violent procedure. She is exhausted, she cannot resist anymore, her body hurts, her neck is injured, and she cannot move any more, she is defeated.
She is bred with the semen of a 'prize' bull. The semen is plunged directly into her uterus with a huge injector. Breeding occurs 6-12 months before her body is even structurally mature enough to be considered a full-grown. She is still a baby.
Humans are taking the exploitation of animals as obvious, as part of our life.
They "NEED" to be superior all the time. Therefore, in order to make them 'easier
to handle' dairy cows are routinely de-horned – a very painful procedure –
without anesthesia.
Horns contain both blood circulation and nerve endings. If horns have already
developed, they removed with saws, horn shears or cutting wire. 1902h horns’
were already developed.
For this brutal procedure, she is once again been grabbed by any organ to the stock, pulling from the head, ears, and shocked with electrical shock.
She is only an innocent baby.
She is not the only one. There are millions of cows and baby cows which going through
this torture. This is not going to stop, not in normative ways.
Billions of people are making it legitimate. Billions of people are putting themselves
and their gluttony before animals’ suffering.
Now her head is tied in a non-normal position.
In this position, 1902h can see her fellow cows getting
their horns cut with brutality. It is heartbreaking,
hearing the screaming of all the young cows. 1902h is
trying to escape, but this is making her neck more
painful. Her head is stuck in the stock, every move
cause more and more pain.
Now the farmer is coming towards her, this is her last
chance; she again struggles to get out from this demolition pillory.
It is hopeless. One farmer is holding her tight and the other one
cuts her horns with a saw. A lot of blood flow over her head
through the nose and to the ground. 1902hs' shrieks were heard
from the corner of the cattle-shed. It was unforgettable experience.
Nine to ten months later, she gives birth, unquestionably with tribulation and difficulty because she was bred too young in the first place.
A male calf is born. Within few hours of delivering her calf, she and her newborn were separated from each other. Since the farmer does not want to "waist" the mother’s milk on her calf, so that the milk that nature intended for him, can be diverted into tanks for humans and the farmer will be able to make financial gain over her body and on the account of the calf's nutrition needs.
Her young is wrenched from her. He struggles to get back to his mother.
His feet are not strong enough but he gives all his strength for that. He
trembles to his mother while weeping and whining. However, it was pointless.
The fragile infant was pulled from his mother by force.
The farmer grabs him by any organ he could catch, including his ears. Both
1902h and her calf were screaming and weeping convulsively. This split is the
beginning of the hardships the young calf will endure; because he is of no use
to the dairy industry, two possible destinies she can endure.
He will be either killed at just a few days old to be sold as low grade 'bob'
veal for products like frozen TV dinners. On the other hand, he might be kept
in a crate for all his short life, and at age of 16 weeks, he will be murdered,
and his butchered body will be sold as 'Veal Calve'.
The methods of dairy and veal production are inextricably linked.
The calf is born in the dairy industry for his mother to produce milk
and he is considered a 'by-product'.
He is confined to small crate for months to be raised for “milk-fed” veal.
“Milk-fed” veal calves are actually fed only a milk substitute mixture, which is devoid of essential nutrients such as iron. The borderline anemia brought about by this iron deficiency, combined with a complete lack of exercise (a calf cannot even turn around in his wooden crate) guarantees that the resulting meat is a tender pinkish-white, which is the quality of veal most appreciated by consumers.
The separation of mother and a baby is always a trauma. It is well known that there is a particularly strong bond between a cow and her calf. They moo and bellow for hours in agony over their loss. They will never be reunited.
This is hopeless. She is too weak and she carries 40 LITRES OF MILK! She gives up
Her udders are attached to a loud milking machine that strips her dry of her milk and, because of stray voltage, gives her intermittent shocks. After each milking, she is returned to the hard surface of the dry lot, to eat more feed that upsets her digestive system, and to be pushed around by other cattle because there are too many animals in too small space.
Within 60 days of her calf's delivery, or on some farms during her first estrus, 1902h will be bred again so that she will produce milk for at least ten of every twelve months. Generations of selective breeding, driven by the desire for higher financial gain instead of the needs of her species, have enabled her body to produce milk in far greater quantities than she
would require nourishing her young. Instinctively responding to the demands placed on it, her body diverts all its energy to producing this valuable, white liquid that is no longer needed to fulfill its biological purpose of sustaining her offspring.
After her first birth, there will be second and third. Moreover, she was forced to give milk during seven months of her nine-month pregnancy. Her life becomes a living hell.
Cow number 1902h is confined to a barren fenced lot with packed dirt floor, where she and one or two hundreds of her mate cows must endure all types of weather, including rain and extreme temperatures 24 hours a day and often covered with their own filth.
If 1902h was able to eat a normal grass diet, she would not produce milk at the
abnormal levels expected on modern dairies, and so today's dairy cows must be
given high-energy feeds.
The unnaturally rich diet causes metabolic disorders including Ketosis, which
can be fatal.
Ketosis is a very common disease that occurs during early lactation and is due to the cow's metabolism being pushed too hard in order to sustain milk yield. Cows with Ketosis become progressively depressed and lethargic. In severe cases, cows lose weight, become dehydrated, and show nervous, agitated behaviour such as delirium, bellowing and walking in circles.
and often forced to stand with their hind feet in the passageway in which manure collects.
This softens the cow's hooves and encourages infection. The use of silage rather than hay as the main winter fodder has increased the problem as cows eating silage excrete more urine and wetter faeces causing more problems with wet bedding and wet slurry in passageways.
The dairy industry is full of diseases. A big problem after the cow has calved, is Ketosis, which in cows is also termed Acetonemia. This occurs because she is inadequately fed, and obliged to METABOLIZE HER OWN BODY FAT TO MAKE MILK!
The most common single cause of distress to dairy cows is Lameness, a painful damage to the foot. The cows have an abnormal large udder. This is distorting the gait and posture of the cow's hind limbs so predisposing to foot damage and together with the fact that they are always standing on concrete its subsequent lameness, which cause Laminitis (a very painful foot disorder). In fact, inspections of the feet of cull cows at slaughter reveal evidence of past or present foot damage in nearly all animals. In order to understand the pains of Laminitis imagine crushing all your fingernails in the door then standing on your fingertips.
The 1902h's life has become increasingly hard. She was bred to produce
almost twice as much milk as cows would have done thirty years ago and
suffers as a result.
She is expected to carry milk that may be in excess of more than 20 liters
at one time – ten times more than would be needed for her calf.
Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) is given to dairy cows, which increases milk production. These create many diseases, some of which can cause lameness, birth defects, low-level shock, the enlargement of internal organs, and fatality.
The reason that farmers continue to inject these hormones is simple: MONEY.
They are able to sell more milk.
The modern scientifically bred and fed dairy cow can yield around 35-50 litres of
milk per day - about ten times more milk than her calf would need.
1902h is sick. She went through two births already. Her body is old but she is not even three years old. She has Mastitis, which is a very painful bacterial infection of the udder that causes inflammation and swelling.
Farmers made those animals from strong wild animals, who could run away from predators, to a huge milk machine, which cannot even sit due to their giant udders. Think of a woman, which cannot walk straight, and her back is bent over due to her breast's weight.
1902h's udders were dragged on the filthy concrete full of urine and feces. Her udders become hard and hot with an abnormal discharge. I guess that the females among us can understand the agony and suffering she is going through.
The necessary frequent injections are painful for 1902h and for all cows in that cruel industry. To make the already overworked cow produce still greater quantities through stimulation by hormones is like powering an industrial machine with more and more electric power and making it work constantly extra hours. But she is not a machine, she is a sentient animal which still enduring the trauma of the separation from her baby born.
The milking machine itself may render the cows more susceptible to infection. The front teats may be subjected to vacuum pulsing for up to two minutes after the quarter has been emptied and while the hind teats are still yielding.
The amount of work done by cow in dairy industry in peak lactation is immense. The heat produce in metabolism by a 600kg cow which yields 351 milk/day is about 130 Mj/day (or 2.7 kilowatts). This is twice over her metabolism. Even in non-pregnant period. To achieve a comparably high work rate a human would have to jog for about 6 hours a day, every day!
1902h is going through her last birth. It is a female calf.
As 1902h was, she also will be a replacement heifer. Once again,
cow number 1902h is going through depressive experience of separation
from her calf.
The demands of factory farming begin to take their toll. Her body is
very weak and has little energy. Her stomach is constantly upset. Her
legs ache from standing always on concrete. She is tired of fighting
the other cattle for food. Her coat no longer glistens. There is no
sparkle in her eyes. They have been “milked” out of her.
Finally, when she is almost five years old, instead of spending any more time
or money on her, the farmer loads her in the trailer and takes her to the auction
yard. She is sick with fever from the Mastitis and frightened of all the stranger
cows and loud noises.
She is unloaded into a pen with other sick, tired, and dying cows known as "cull"
or "butcher" dairy cows.
She can see and smell their fear. Her fate is sealed. She is pushed into the arena
with dozens of people staring at her. She is sick. She is weak. She is scared. She
shakes when she walks. There is loud yelling and someone is twisting her tail to make
her hurry, but she is too ill and too tired to care. She is sold for 33 cents a
pound and roughly loaded onto a huge truck fitted with "used up" dairy cattle like herself.
She is transported to the slaughterhouse, where the smell of death fills her nostrils and her heart swells with terror. For all her life, she was exploited by Humans. She has endured a life of production that played no role in the interest of her own needs. She has provided milk, butter, yogurt, ice cream, and cheese. Now she will provide hamburger meat. Flesh for the flesh-eaters.
A whole day passes without food or water for her. Then she is forced into a
chute and cannot move while a man places an instrument against her forehead,
right on the star that used to shine so brightly, between yet above her big
gentle brown eyes.
The instrument feels unnaturally cold, and she trembles with fear as the
captive bullet explodes from the gun, tearing through hot flesh and solid bone
to rupture her brain. The stem of that brain, still functioning in its last moments,
draws in her final, shuddering breath.
This was aimed to stun her. It is doing its job in a miserable way. She trembles through her last moments. The end is coming. Her throat was cut. Huge amounts of blood flows from her body. She now may be in her most hardship situation she has ever been in before.
If she has one concluding thought prior to that final invasion of tempered steel, it might well be a question of the fairness of betrayal by those who have profited from all that she produced when she was younger, stronger, and more able. She lived and died in the service of a ruthless force.
Her body, still warm from life, is quickly and efficiently skinned (her Skin will now be part of someone's coat) and butchered into parts and pieces to be tabulated into inventories. She is only statistic.
The story of 1902h is not unique. Daily, millions of dairy cattle suffer because they are treated only as ambulatory factories for milk and meat, with no regard for their emotional needs, physical comfort, or dietary requirements.
Humans blast 5,000 volts of electrified pain into their flesh. They batter them with metal pipes, bullhooks, flank straps, and spur to obliterate their memories of a mother’s love and infinite green. Cows on today’s farms live only about four to five years, as opposed to the life expectancy of 20-25 years enjoyed by cows of an earlier era. No other species besides Humans drinks milk beyond infancy, and no other species drinks the milk of another species. Yet, cows' milk is consuming, and as long as animals continue to be used for food and fiber, abuse continues to exist.
